The Four of Swords
Four of Swords

Card Nicknames: The coffin card, the recovery card, the recuperation card, the sabbatical card, the meditation card, the rest card.

Short meaning: The Four of Swords card usually means a period of rest, recovery, recuperation, healing, meditation, peace, relaxation, or withdrawal. It could mean that someone is taking time off from a job, a break from personal demands, or entering a hospital. Usually this rest or withdrawal has the purpose of personal recovery from stress or health problems. Because drawings for this card often show a person resting on top of a coffin, sometimes in readings this card indicates that a person has already passed.

(The full meaning of this card is under construction. Selected quotes to follow.)

Weschcke and Slate (see Sources) wrote "Convalescence, recovery from sickness, change for the better.

"Rest from sorrow, yet after and through it. Peace from and after War. Relaxation of anxiety. Quetness, rest, ease, and plenty, yet after struggle. Goods of this life, abundance. Modified by the dignity as in the other cases." (Weschcke and Slate, p. 474)
