The Queen of Cups
Queen of Cups

Card Nicknames: The mother card, the nurturer, compassion, artist

Short meaning: The Queen of Cups is a compassionate and nurturing woman, often beautiful and creative.

Full meaning: Cups are the equivalent of the suit of hearts in playing cards, and so this is the Queen of Hearts. Queen cards can represent a woman, or the characteristics attributed to the woman on the card. The Queen of Cups is emotional, known for warmth and compassion. Sometimes, due to her nurturing and affectionate nature, the Queen of Cups is known as the mother card.

Key words used to describe this queen include romantic, compassionate, devoted, loyal, sympathetic, affectionate, intense, sensitive, sociable, helpful, trustworthy, creative, artistic, imaginative, attractive, sensual, intuitive, and kind. Negative traits of the queen relate to emotion overriding reason, and may include being easily hurt, self-indulgent, possessive, controlling, naive, gullible, easily controlled by others, impractical, unfocused, and lacking common sense.

This queen is also artistic, and loves to create a beautiful environment. She looks after her family and is concerned with the welfare of others. She can be intuitive, and may have good psychic abilities.

Louis (see Sources) gives an upright summary of this queen as "Deep feeling. Nurturing." His reversed summary is "A fickle woman."

Louis' lengthy description includes "Situation and Advice: The Queen of Cups suggests an opportunity to turn inward to examine your feelings about a matter. Your hunches and intuitions are reliable guides. Pay special attention to dreams and psychic perceptions. A loving friend may come to your assistance, or you may have the opportunity to show someone how much you care. Your mother or a mother substitute may play a significant role in near future events.

"People: One's mother. One who feels deeply. One who understands his or her own feelings. An artistic, emotoinal, imaginative, visionary, empathetic, caring woman. A devoted wife and mother. A nurse. A helper. A good listener. A social worker. A helpful, understanding, caring woman. A lover of animals. A woman capable of mysticism or prophesy. A woman deeply involved in her inner world and in the realm of fantasy. A woman of intuition and keen perception. An intensely emotional, passionate and loyal woman. Cups always represent people who may be too easily influenced by others." (Louis, pp. 282-83)
